Around 1% of pregnancies are affected by hyperemesis gravidarum.

Despite the devastating effects of the condition on so many people’s lives, it has historically been neglected within the research arena.

This costs lives, and ruins what should be a precious time in people’s lives. This hinders our capacity to gain new knowledge about its causes and how to better treat and manage it.

The lack of research stems from various factors including stigma around the condition and fear regarding medical interventions during pregnancy, particularly early on.

We do not yet have a robust definition, or understand how it is caused. All this is compounded by a general lack of funding and interest in women’s health conditions.

The Bikkja Trust seeks to address this major gap through stimulating diverse research into the most pressing questions patients and professionals have about the condition’s cause, its effects and its treatments.
